858 907) Cross the bridge over Widdale Beck
and follow the road to the river Ure at New Bridge.
DO NOT cross the bridge instead descend to the
river bank via a ladder on the left, continue
upstream through a small wood. Cross a ladder stile
and bear left to leave the riverbank, climbing up
to pass along the top of a wood. 2

853 912) Go over a ladder stile (SP
Mossdale Head). Bear right across a large
depression and follow the right wall through a gap
stile to reach a ladder stile. 3

850 913) Cross the ladder stile and descend
through the wood on a clear path. Cross a small
beck, bear left and continue through a gate to the
left of a barn. Follow the right wall through a
gate (SP Mossdale Head) onto a farm
road. 4

847 915) To visit Cotter Force turn right
(SP A684) and at the main road turn right.
After crossing Holme Heads Bridge leave the road
(SP Cotter Force). Follow a clear path over
2 gap stiles to the view falls and then return to
point 5. 5

847 915) Follow the farm road through 2
gates and then fork left onto another track. Stay
on this track through 4 more gates. 6

937 919) Leave the track staying with the
right wall through a gate and then follow the river
upstream through 3 more gates to Mossdale Head
Farm. Pass just to the right of the farmhouse and
around the barn to reach a bridge. 7

827 919) Cross the bridge and continue
straight ahead with a broken wall on the right.
After going through a gateway turn right and follow
a derelict wall uphill, through another derelict
wall turn right and cross a wooden stile in the
fence. Follow the wall round and descend to the
road at Thwaite Bridge House. 8

826 923) Cross the road and then the river
bridge (SP Cotterdale 1). Go through the
wood on a clear path and leave it over a ladder
stile. Bear right and climb through the steep
pasture to a ladder stile in the top right hand
corner. Continue in the same direction over 2 more
ladder stiles. 9

832 930) Bear left and descend a clear path
to reach the Cotterdale road near a cattle grid by
a wood. Turn left and follow this quiet lane over
the cattle grid into the hamlet of
Cotterdale. 10

830 940) Almost at the end of the hamlet
leave the road over a footbridge on the right
(SP Hardraw 3). Go through a gate and cross
2 fields via 2 stiles. Continue along a small
watercourse to a gated stile. 11

835 936) Go through the stile and follow
the fenced stream along the bottom of the field, at
a broken cross wall go through a gap and bear left
to a stile in the top wall. Turn right and follow
the right wall through a broken wall. Continue via
a stile above a barn and a gate below the next
barn. 12

839 933) Staying on a level course follow a
clear path through 2 stiles and a gate to arrive at
an old sheepfold (Kempera Folds). 13

844 928) Continue on the level path through a
large pasture. When the next cross wall comes into
view climb up to the left and go through a gap
stile. 14

852 923) Stay to the right of a short section
of wall, pass a waymark post and descend to a
ladder stile on the left. From the stile head
straight across the moor to arrive at a wide track
(The Pennine Way). Turn right and descend
through a gate/stile onto a walled lane. 15

859 919) Leave the lane at the first gate
on the right, follow the left wall down over a
ladder stile. Cross a large pasture and go through
a gate in the bottom left hand side. 16

858 913) Bear right down through a gate,
cross the field to a gap stile leading onto the
road. Follow the A684 Hawes road back to
Appersett. |
