WALK 4 - West Burton and the Templars Chapel

Location:

Aysgarth Falls is situated 8 miles west of Leyburn on the A684 Northallerton to Sedburgh road.

Start/Parking:

Aysgarth Falls National Park Centre has a large car park.

Distance:

6.75 miles circular. Allow 3 hrs.

1 (GR 011 888) Leave the car park at the opposite end to the entrance (SP Upper Falls) follow the path down to the left and through a stile onto the road. Cross the bridge and leave the road by the Carriage Museum (St. Andrew's Church). Climb some steps and follow the path to the church entrance. Turn right on a path leading directly away from the church door. Leave the churchyard through a gate following a tarmac lane to the main road.

2 (GR 013 883) Cross the road and through the stile opposite (SP Eshington Bridge). Cross the field and through another stile. Descend to a stile in the valley bottom, then follow the fence up and through a gated stile. Bear right and descend through a gate in the bottom right of the field. Continue downhill bearing slightly left to a stile in the bottom right corner by a gate. After about 25yds turn left through a stile and then down to stile leading onto the road.

3 (GR 015 878) Turn right and follow the road. After crossing Eshington Bridge take a gap stile on the right (SP West Burton). Cross the field and go over a wooden step stile. Follow the right wall to its end. Bear left to go through 2 stiles by the side of Bishopdale Beck. A clear path leads across 2 fields and onto the main road.

4 (GR 016 869) Cross the road and climb the steps opposite (SP West Burton 75yds). A narrow lane leads through a stile onto the road. Turn right and follow the road to the village centre. Turn left at the green, follow the road down to the bottom of the green and turn right onto a rough track (SP Morpeth Gate and Cote Bridge).

5 (GR 019 867) Cross a stone packhorse bridge, and after a few yards turn left and follow a path up to a stile. Turn right and continue up a fenced path and through a stile by a barn. Climb toward Barrack wood.

6 (GR 022 868) Enter the wood over a wooden stile, turn right and follow a clear path through 2 stiles to leave the wood. Climb steeply through 2 more stiles, then head half right up to a wall.

7 (GR 027 866) Turn left onto a green track along the shoulder of Penhill (Hudson Lane). At a junction (Morpeth Scar) turn right and continue on a good track (High Lane) to a T-Junction.

8 (GR 038 881) Turn left through a gate onto a walled green lane which receives a concrete surface as it begins to descend.

9 (GR 039 887) On the second part of a double bend leave the track by turning left. Pass between 2 woods keeping nearer to the right hand one. Go through a gate then bear right descending towards a fenced enclosure (The Templars' Chapel).

10 (GR 035 887) Continue through the stile by the chapel. Turn right and descend a stony track (SP Temple Farm). At the bottom go through a gate and follow the track past the farm and through a stile onto the main road.

11 (GR 032 889) Turn left and follow the road. After crossing a bridge at the entrance to Hestholme Farm go through a stile and cross the field diagonally to reach the riverside. Continue through several fields, an obvious track rises away from the riverbank and after going through a stile and gate combination bear left towards a small wood.

12 (GR 018 887) Go through a stile and continue on a good path leaving the wood at a gap stile. Cross the field towards the church entrance and return to the car park by the outward route.
